Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has tipped Michael Carrick to become the manager of Manchester United on a full-time basis in the future.
Carrick oversaw four games in charge as caretaker boss of United following Solskjaer’s sacking last season.
However, the Norwegian revealed that the former midfielder initially had reservations about taking the job.
Solskjaer on Carrick.
“‘I love him as a person, but while he never said anything to me about it, the day I got booted, I went to see him and said: ‘I’m gone, they want you to take over,’ he told The Athletic.
“I told him that I wanted him to do it. After ten days, Michael came to me and said: ‘I don’t want to do this.”
Carrick left the Red Devils in the wake of Ralf Rangnick’s appointment as interim boss in December 2021.
The former England midfielder took over as Middlesborough's manager in October 2022. The club were 21st in the Championship when Carrick became head coach, and he has since guided them to the playoffs.
Following on from his positive start to life in the dugout, Carrick's former teammate and colleague has backed him to return to the dugout at Old Trafford in the future.
Solskjaer tips Carrick to become Man United manager.
"I am 100 per cent sure that Michael will be the manager of Manchester United if he wants to be," Solskjaer said.
"If I was a player I’d want him as a manager because he wouldn’t be unreasonable. He knows what he wants.
“He demands respect and hard work, but he gives it back as well.”
Middlesbrough will face Coventry in the semi-finals of the playoffs where they will go on to face the winner of the other clash between Luton and Sunderland for a place at Wembley on May 27.
