West Bromwich Albion boss Sam Allardyce is pushing for a 'circuit breaker' suspension to football fixtures in order to combat the rapid rise in Covid cases in the UK. If follows news on Tuesday that the Premier League recorded its highest number of cases with 18 out of 1,479 tests coming back positive.
On Monday, Manchester City's fixture with Everton was postponed with just hours to go before kickoff due to the number of positive cases at the Etihad. Allardyce insists drastic action is necessary. Speaking after West Brom's 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Leeds United, Big Sam laid out his personal take.
"Everyone's safety is more important than anything else," the former England manager insisted. "When I listen to the news the variant virus transmits quicker than the original virus, we can only do the right thing which is have a circuit break."
"I am 66 years old and the last thing I want to do is catch Covid. I'm very concerned for myself and football in general. If that's what needs to be done we need to do it. We had one positive this week and it seems to be creeping around no matter how hard we try."
However, it doesn't look as if the Premier League is planning for the circuit break Allardyce has in mind, as they confirmed earlier today.
