Roy Keane leaves Martin O’Neill at Nottingham Forest

Former Ireland assistant Roy Keane has left Martin O'Neill at Nottingham Forest.

Keane spent five years with O'Neill during their reign together as manager and assistant of the Republic of Ireland before they agreed to leave their post late last year. O'Neill then joined Forest in January and brought Keane on as his assistant but the former Manchester United captain has now decided to leave the club just months after joining them. Nottingham Forest confirmed the news and Keane thanked O'Neill on the club's website for his help over the years.

"Working with Martin over the last few years has been a magnificent experience, one of my greatest in football both as a player and a coach and one I want to personally thank him for."

Forest finished in ninth spot in the Championship and O'Neill said in January that Keane could be tough to handle at times but that he was a special individual.

"He was a great asset to me as assistant manager at the Republic of Ireland. He is tough to handle, no doubt, but that's what makes him special. He was a special player and you don't win things at Manchester United by just sitting round."
