And now, in their latest quirk of commonality, both Keane and O'Neill have been recognised as two of the greatest Nottingham Forest players of all time.
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the foundation of Nottingham Forest, a gala dinner took place on Monday night.
And at the ceremony, Forest's greatest ever XI was selected position by position.
O'Neill, who made 371 appearances for Forest, was selected on the right wing while there was no surprise to see Keane in the centre of midfield.
