Roy Keane ‘always had question marks’ about David De Gea

Roy Keane has never been all that convinced by David De Gea in the Manchester United goals.

And so the Spaniard joins a long list of United players who have failed to convince the Cork man. De Gea signed a four year contract extension at Manchester United during the week but Keane reckons it was a rash move by his former club. Last year was 28-year-old De Gea's worst year at Old Trafford since he joined in 2011. He made a number of costly errors as his confidence diminished in a short period of time, and speaking on Sky Sports on Sunday afternoon, Keane expressed his reservations about the goalkeeper's character, before going onto claim that he's always had his doubts about De Gea between the sticks.

"I'm not so sure, honestly," began Keane. "I've always worried about him, the character side of things. Is he commanding? I've never got the impression that he's the type of person that puts demands on people around him..." "He's made big mistakes. The big test for a keeper at a big club is how you react after a mistake, and I think he's made far too many mistakes..."

"It's a personal matter. Technically, is he a good goalkeeper? Of course he is. But I think it's more the package, I'd have question marks about him..."

Meanwhile, De Gea's former manager Jose Mourinho also has his doubts as to whether United's contract offer was one worth making.

"I think the moment where he signed his huge contract is a moment where I don't think United don't need to pay as much as that to have him. One or two years ago, you have the world after him, but when he signed the contract, the doors are closed...."
