Press reports this morning say that the Liverpool legend may be back at Anfield a year from now.
The big story of 2015 so far has been the announcement that Liverpool's captain Steven Gerrard will leave the club at the end of the season. So far all the talk has revolved around gushing tributes and speculation about where he goes next but today's Daily Telegraph has a new, and intriguing angle to the story.
They say that Liverpool are already looking at getting the midfielder back on loan next January when the MLS close season kicks in. We've seen Thierry Henry and Robbie Keane, among others, use the MLS close season to return to Europe to stay sharp and it seems Brendan Rodgers fancies a quick return for the 34-year-old.
It is widely assumed that America is the destination for the former England international and with such a long off season in the US, it seems logical that if Gerrard does return to Europe, that he returns to his former home. Rodgers' reported reluctance to let Gerrard go is another factor cited by the paper as a reason for Gerrard to be back at Anfield a year from now, however briefly.
As Gerrard said in his statement, he would never be able to play for another team against the Reds: “I’m going to carry on playing and although I can’t confirm at this stage where that will be, I can say it will be somewhere that means I won’t be playing for a competing club and will not therefore be lining up against Liverpool; that is something I could never contemplate."
With that in mind, he would not return to any other Premier League club, so Liverpool fans may just see a little more of their hero after the end of the current season.
