Sepp Blatter is thought to be rethinking his decision to walk away from the Fifa presidency
The controversial Swiss resigned less than two weeks ago as a corruption investigation led by the FBI engulfed football's governing body, just days after his reelection for a fifth term.
An extraordinary Fifa congress, expected to take place in December, is due to elect a new president, but reports in the Swiss media suggest Blatter may not walk away after all.
Newspaper Schweiz am Sonntag quotes an anonymous source which claims that since he announced he was stepping down, a number of messages of support from African and Asian countries has prompted a potential change of heart.
It is likely any reversal of his position would have had something to do with, either as a cause or an effect of, the departure of communications director Walter di Gregorio earlier this week.
Domenico Scala, the independent chairman of Fifa's audit and compliance committee, reacted to the rumours by arguing that the resignation should be honoured.
"For me, the reforms are the central topic. That is why I think it is clearly indispensable to follow through with the initiated process of president's change as it has been announced," said Scala.
