The man better known as 'The Ginger Pelé'

The former Republic of Ireland defender he's quitting the game  at 34 due to injury. His club Wycombe Wanderers made the announcement this morning on their Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/wwfcofficial/status/545503619630780416 The 'illustrious' the tweet refers to must mean his spells at Luton, Tottenham and Norwich as well as Wycombe where he ended his career after 501 club appearances. The Carndonagh man was a threat at both ends of the pitch and despite being mostly played as a centre-half he did pop up with some impressive goals in his time earning him the nickname 'The Ginger Pele' In fact he was so famous that he even had a whole sing dedicated to him in 2010. We bet you'll be singing 'whoa-oh whoa-oh Gary Doherty' all day long after this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1x59F5TKJHA#t=93 He secured 34 caps in his time with the Republic of Ireland and was our top scorer in a bleak 2004 Euro's campaign with a grand total of three goals. Still more goals for Ireland than Ronaldo ever managed. One of Doherty's was this winner against Georgia: Spurs fans had a love/hate relationship with 'The Doc' and we don't mean in a King Nidge kinda way. However he did have some good days for the Londoners, espcially when he deflected a shot into the net against Arsenal using nothing but his face Talk about taking one for the team : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXaTs5Zos9g
