The English Football Association are reportedly plotting an ambitious move to appoint Pep Guardiola as the next England manager.
Southgate resigned from his position as manager after eight years in charge following the Euro 2024 final defeat against Spain last weekend.
In his statement, he said that "it’s time for change, and for a new chapter".
Speculation about who his replacement will be has heated up with a variety of names mentioned however it appears that the FA have their eyes set on Guardiola.
The Manchester City boss' contract expires at the end of this season and he is yet to confirm whether he will extend his stay or not.
While England will want a replacement as quickly as possible, they are willing to wait for someone like Guardiola - as per The Independent.
If that is to be the route they go down then an interim manager will almost certainly be appointed, with current Under-21s manager Lee Carsley the most likely to be appointed.
Guardiola may well be an attractive proposition but he isn't the current favourite.
Eddie Howe seems to be the most popular candidate to take over. Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel have also been mentioned as well as a suggestion to go for Jurgen Klopp by Gary Lineker.
Sarina Wiegman - current manager of the England women's team - is also another suggestion.
As for Southgate himself, he is set to take some time out of the game but has been offered the chance to become a pundit on ITV in recent days.
