Though it is fun to watch and equally fun to play, there are certain moments in the sport which remind us that for all of the frivolity, serious injuries can be obtained and careers can be ended.
It can be a cruel twist of the leg as a player's studs remain planted in the grass, a mistimed tackle leading to a broken leg, or - in the case of Feyenoord's Steven Berghuis - it can be an opponent brutally rubbing you softly on the back of your head.
Berghuis - who most likely woke up on Sunday morning assuming that it would be a day just like any other - can instead be seen walking past an FC Utrecht player, minding his own business, before he gets atrociously and carelessly rubbed on the head, in a manner one might rub a dog.
Unsurprisingly, Berghuis goes down, presumably in shock - which can be common after one has experienced moments of extreme violence.
When you step out onto a football pitch you don't expect something like that to happen to you. If you did, you'd never be brave enough to ever take to the field.
Let's hope that, eventually, Berghuis can rid his mind of the memory of this disgusting act and one day return to a normal life as a footballer who just wants to play the game, without harming anyone.
