Mikel Arteta has commended the performance of Jack Porter who made his debut for the club in last night's 5-1 Carabao Cup win over Bolton at the Emirates.
The 16-year-old made history by becoming the youngest player ever to start a senior competitive game for the Gunners, breaking Cesc Fabregas' previous record which was set in 2003.
Despite the fact that Porter has lined out for England at under-age level, he is eligible for Ireland due to one of his parents hailing from Dublin.
Despite leaving in a goal from Aaron Collins shortly after half-time, Porter looked vocal and capable in between the sticks. He also looked good with his feet and acted well as a sweeper.
Speaking at a press conference after the win, Arteta commended the ability and maturity of Porter to step up and perform on such a big stage at such a young age.
"We told him yesterday and he was over the moon straight away." said the Arsenal boss. "I think he spoke to his family. And yeah, they weren't prepared for that. It's a big step. It's a big occasion for them. And I think they were nervous about it.
"But I think he reacted really well. He was really composed yesterday in training today as well. His teammates really helped him as well on that. And what an experience and what a way to break a record.
"Jack has been training with us since pre-season, we’re confident he can do the role obviously he plays in the international team, we’ve seen what he can do and we believe he was the right choice."
It's not known whether or not Porter would consider a switch to Ireland, but it would certainly mean the future between the posts would be in safe hands with Kelleher and the Arsenal youngster in the ranks.
