Mason Greenwood is set to change his international allegiance from England to Jamaica.
The 22-year-old has made just one competitive appearance for England as he came on as a late substitute in a UEFA Nations League clash against Iceland in September 2020.
Following that game, he and Phil Foden were sent home from the England camp after they breached COVID-19 quarantine protocols.
Greenwood was charged with attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour in January 2022 which led to him being dropped from the Manchester United squad and Gareth Southgate’s side.
The charges were dropped just over a year later in February 2023, and though the FA never officially banned Greenwood, his career is yet to recover.
He left United to join Marseille in a £30m deal earlier this summer as he looks for a fresh start in his domestic playing career.
Now, Jamaica have made a formal approach to transfer Greenwood’s international registration as the striker looks to play on the world stage once more.
Jamaica recently appointed former United coach, Steve McLaren as their new manager. Sources told ESPN that the FA have sanctioned the change and FIFA have now been asked to approve the switch.
Bradford-born Greenwood is eligible to play for the Caribbean nation through his father.
FIFA regulations allow players to switch national teams provided they have made no more than three competitive appearances before turning 21.
McLaren was appointed boss of the Reggae Boyz after they failed to advance past the group stage of the Copa America.
McLaren’s arrival has inspired a fresh approach for Greenwood who reportedly declined similar approaches last year.
It is thought with his former coach at the helm, Greenwood is open to the change of allegiance.
