Martin O’Neill’s former side offering him a surprise route back to club management

The FAI need to get that contract sorted quickly.

Martin O'Neill may brush off discussion about his future with Ireland, but the worry around his long-term commitment to the Boys in Green remains among Irish fans. He has spoken of how happy he is to be working with the FAI, but as the Euros roll around this summer, O'Neill will be a free-agent at the end of the tournament when his current two-year deal expires. Despite his protestations to the contrary, it's understood the Derryman is wanted by a number of club sides in England to get back to full-time day-to-day management at club level. And the side where he enjoyed his best ever playing days now lead the chase for his managerial talents. The Sun is reporting that Nottingham Forest owner Fawaz Al-Hasawi’s wants O'Neill to be the long-term successor to Dougie Freedman, who was sacked earlier this season. Currently, Paul Williams is acting as caretaker boss and he is being assisted by ex-Republic of Ireland international midfielder Andy Reid. O'Neill has told reporters that he is looking to start contract talks with the FAI soon, but as of yet, with two months left until our first game against Sweden on June 13th, no deal has been forthcoming. Perhaps a move from the two-time European Cup winning side can help matters along at Abbotstown.
