Martin Odegaard rejected Liverpool and United for ‘privilege’ of playing for Real Madrid

The transfer tour ended in Madrid.

Martin Odegaard has revealed how he turned down offers from Liverpool and Manchester United last January to sign for Spanish giants Real Madrid. The Norwegian prodigy, who won't turn 17 until December, visited both Anfield and Old Trafford as part of a whirlwind tour of some of Europe's biggest clubs, before finally joining Real Madrid, where he is currently developing his game under the tutelage of former Real star Zinedine Zidane at reserve side Castilla. 'I visited Liverpool, the two Manchester teams and they were all very nice but my choice was Real Madrid and I am very happy with that,' Odegaard said after playing for Norway's Under-21 side against England last night. 'Madrid is very good. It is the best place if you want to become a better footballer. I have been given the No 10 shirt (at Castilla) and it is a big responsibility having that number but it is the one that I like and I am just going to enjoy it.' Odegaard made his Real debut towards the end of last season and has been named in the club's Champions League squad this season, but, despite already having six senior international caps, the youngster is happy to remain at Castilla for now, although his Premier League suitors would do well to monitor to situation as he refused to rule out a loan move to England at some point.

'I have spoken a little bit with [Real manager] Rafa Benitez but not too much at the minute. My focus is to become a better footballer and develop every day,' Odegaard said.

'Maybe (England) will happen in the future and the time will show but right now I am very happy where I am with my club and the situation there. Zidane is a great coach, a great man to learn from. He was one of the best in the world and it is a privilege to work with him.'
