Man United issue statement on Marcus Rashford’s cup final goal against Newcastle

The strike initially went down as an own goal

Manchester United have confirmed that their second goal in the Carabao Cup final has been awarded to Marcus Rashford. United were 2-0 winners against Newcastle on Sunday as the Red Devils won their first trophy in six years and the first of the Erik ten Hag era. Casemiro opened the scoring, before Rashford doubled their lead however it was credited as a Sven Botman own goal as his effort deflected off the Dutchman and looped over Loris Karius. https://twitter.com/FootballJOE/status/1629893002876387328 Marcus Rashford was first told that the goal wouldn not be his by Roy Keane, on Sky Sports, however the forward said he would be claiming it anyway. The forward also tweeted to celebrate the goal, saying: "A moment you dream of all your life. Scoring for the club you support in a cup final. That one is for the fans." https://twitter.com/MarcusRashford/status/1629974627672899586 However since then, United have confirmed that the English Football League (EFL) have reversed their decision and that the goal has now been awarded to the England international. A statement on the club's website said:

"Manchester United can confirm Marcus Rashford has been officially credited with the second goal in the Carabao Cup final win over Newcastle United.

"The club has received clarification that Rashford is indeed the goalscorer as his shot was deemed to be on target by the various match officials at Wembley."

Confirmation that the goal belongs to the forward marks Rashford's 25th in all competitions this season. After the game, Rashford told Sky Sports that winning their first piece of silverware under Ten Hag had fuelled the fire to go on and win even more trophies. "It's a mixture of all emotions but it's massive for us to be involved in these types of games and something we've missed as a club.
