The Argentine winger was dining with his family in when robbers used scaffolding poles to smash their way in to his Cheshire mansion.
The break-in occurred at 7.30pm, just hours after the Red Devils' dominant 3-1 Premier League victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford.
The former Real Madrid man's family were reportedly "very shaken up" by the incident. Di Maria, his wife Jorgelina Cardoso and their one-year-old daughter Mia were escorted away to safety by United's security team.
A spokesman explained what how the incident unfolded to Sportsmail. The gang were said to have fled the scene, after their attempted break-in set off the alarm.
At 7.30pm on Saturday, January 31, police received reports of a burglary at a house in Prestbury.
A number of offenders tried to gain access to the property by trying to smash the back door. The alarm was raised before the men got inside and they fled the scene.
The winger's agent confirmed that the attempted robbery took place on Sunday. Cheshire police are currently investigating the incident.
