Manchester United are already looking to next season.
With United's first summer signing close to being announced in the form of Swansea City winger Daniel James, the club is looking to make the appropriate appointments behind the scenes.
The introduction of the club's first-ever technical director is considered a priority by United's board and Mike Phelan, who joined Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's coaching team when he returned to Old Trafford last December, was believed to be one of the front-runners for the role.
Phelan had yet to put pen to paper on a full-time deal with the Red Devils up to now and speculation was rife about his future.

But on Friday morning, the club confirmed that Phelan has signed a three-year deal to continue in his role as assistant manager under Solskjaer which likely brings an end to Phelan's association with Australian side Central Coast Mariners.
"I am thrilled to be back as assistant manager," Phelan said. "Manchester United has been a huge part of my life since I joined as a player in 1989 and I am delighted to be able to continue that relationship in this key role.
"Since returning in December, I have enjoyed working with Ole, Michael, Kieran, Mark and Emilio and we are all focused on preparing for the new season."
