The one-cap England goalkeeper said that he didn't want Ten Hag to see him train, as he believed the coach would then try to keep him at Old Trafford.
"I didn't really want the manager to see me in training because I knew he'd probably want to keep me," Henderson said.
"I told all the hierarchy: 'I need to go and play football. I don't want to be playing second fiddle'."
Henderson now reportedly has little chance of becoming Man United's number-one goalkeeper, even if De Gea leaves.
The Spanish 'keeper will be a free agent at the end of June and has yet to agree on a new deal with United.
