Louis van Gaal ‘rejected the chance’ to sign Cristiano Ronaldo

One of Louis van Gaal's first acts as Manchester United manager was to reject the chance to sign a club legend and best player in the world.

No, not Bebe. Van Gaal snubbed an offer to take goal machine and Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford, according to Alfredo Duro. The Spanish journalist was on TV football show El Chiringuito and claimed that 'Van Gaal said he did not want' the United legend. Duro said that Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, met with Alex Ferguson's brother Martin, a former United scout, last summer and asked him to relay the player's availability to Van Gaal. But the word back was that the Dutchman wasn't interested.   Ronaldo spent six years at Old Trafford, scoring 118 goals in 292 games and winning three league titles, two League Cups, the FA Cup and the Champions League, before moving to Real Madrid for £80million in 2009. The Portuguese forward has been repeatedly linked with a move back to United, but, with a £1billion buy-out clause, the chances are pretty remote. Hat-tip Eurosport & Deportes Atresmedia.
