Kalvin Phillips was filmed angrily responding to the travelling West Ham fans, who slammed his recent performance.
Phillips was introduced as a second half substitute when West Ham were 3-1 up against Newcastle and gave away a penalty when he tripped up Anthony Gordon with 13 minutes to go.
Alexander Isak scored the resulting spot kick before a Harvey Barnes brace completed the turnaround and inflicted a morale-damaging defeat for the Hammers.
But when making his way back to the team bus, the 28-year-old was involved in more controversy.
Some West Ham fans had chosen to berate the on-loan Manchester City midfielder with shouts of “useless” and Phillips responded by sticking his middle finger up at them.
His reaction went viral on social media with one fan saying: “Yep, Kalvin Phillips can f**k off back to City.”
Another said: “In the heat of the moment after getting abuse from fans he has reacted but unfortunately he is a representative of the club and not setting a good example to young fans done at west ham now no coming back from this for him there back to city it is.”
Others meanwhile defended his actions, with another saying: “Fair play Kalvin, one of the nicest footballers off the pitch so to be pushed for that reaction speaks volumes.
“Good for him. No matter how bad you think a player is if you abuse him you can’t then moan when he reacts. If you give it you’ve just got to take it,” added another.
