It seemed for the life of us that Ander Herrera was the natural heir to the captaincy throne.
The Spaniard looked to be in line for the captaincy gig given that club captain Michael Carrick is 36-years-old and it is unlikely he would be playing week in week out.
Herrera was officially unveiled as vice captain over the summer only for Mourinho to say that Manchester United does not have a vice captain.
Well, Carrick isn't starting against Real Madrid tonight so you'd think Herrera would be donning to captain's armband but that is not the case.
Instead, the honour goes to Antonio Valencia, he has been at the club since 2009 but it is still a strange call.

Herrera surely did enough to prove he was captain material last season and proved he in Manchester United's most important player on the grandest stage of them all.
Kick off tonight is at 19:45, it is worth noting that Cristiano Ronaldo will not start against his former side.
