Jose Mourinho gives worrying update on David de Gea contract situation

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has said that he is not confident that goalkeeper David de Gea will exercise a one-year option in his contract to stay at Old Trafford beyond this season.

De Gea's contract expires next summer but does have a one-year option in the agreement to extend his stay in Manchester until the following summer if he chooses to trigger that clause. The Spanish international has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid, however, that move could now be unlikely with the signing of Thibaut Courtois during the summer, but nevertheless, there would be no shortage of suitors for de Gea next year were he to leave Manchester United and Mourinho concedes that his departure is a possibility.

"I am not confident," he told Sky Sports. "I cannot find the word in English, but let's see what happens. "Only the club, David and his people can answer that. My comment is only that everyone knows how good he is, how important he is for Manchester United and, if the club want to be better than it is and not worse, obviously it would be very important to keep David."

The news of a potential exit strays away from what de Gea said last month when he indicated that he would be putting pen to paper after establishing a level of comfort in his surroundings.

"I feel really loved at his club from the fans from all the people who are for this club," he told reporters after being asked about signing a new contract. "I am really happy to play for this club, one of best clubs in the world, so for me really good to be part of this club."
