John Terry’s new Chelsea clause is a bit embarrassing

This is one way for Terry to avoid an awkward moment.

John Terry has enjoyed a fruitful first season at Aston Villa since joining the club from Chelsea, where he had spent almost the entirety of his career prior. The West Midlands side stuttered through much of the season before improving and eventually finishing in the play off spots. They have since progressed to the Championship play off final, which they will play against Fulham on Saturday. Should they win that match and return to the Premier League, Terry will have the option of renewing his deal for 12 months. That deal will see Terry stay on his current £80,000-per-week contract, while also reportedly allowing him to miss Villa's games against Chelsea in the process. Terry famously dropped down a division in joining Villa so as to avoid facing Chelsea in the Premier League and a report in The Telegraph suggests that his manager, Steve Bruce, is willing to allow him to sit out games against his former club. The centre-back played his final game for the Blues in May 2017, when he was substituted after 26 minutes (in honour of his squad number) and given a guard of honour by his teammates.
