Time for the future!

Heimir Hallgrimsson has named a very unexperienced squad ahead of Ireland's friendly versus Grenada in Murcia this Saturday.

Due to FIFA international break window regulations, Hallgrimsson was not able to pick players from top division clubs.

Instead, the Icelander has brought in a total of nine uncapped players and seven fresh faces to the Ireland set-up. (Jaden Umeh, Kasey McAteer and Joel Bagan removed from squad).

Ireland defeated Real Murcia B 2-0 on Tuesday with goals coming from debutant, Milenic Alli and the experienced Adam Idah.

And the game against Grenada is marketed as a chance to see the next generation of Irish players in action ahead of friendlies against Qatar and Canada coming at the end of May.

The team we want to see start for Ireland versus Grenada

Formation: 4-2-3-1

Hallgrimsson in the past has made it clear that a 5-back system is not the future of Irish football, but was deemed necessary during the World Cup qualification campaign.

GK: Josh Keeley

After an impressive season for Luton Town this year, the net minder recorded 13 clean sheets. Keeley deserves a chance to make his mark on the international stage before Caoimhin Kelleher retains his position.

The ex-St. Pats academy graduate wont admit it, but he his fortunate to make his debut due to Luton narrowly missing the play-offs allowing the Dubliner to be called up.

RB: James Abankwah

Another former St. Pats academy star, Abankwah deserves the chance to make the right-back position his own after the inevitable retirement of Seamus Coleman.

Although arguably more comfortable as a RCB in a back five, the Watford defender has played at right back this season and will offer Ogbene a strong defensive platform behind him to express himself.

CB: Eiran Cashin

Cashin enjoyed a fruitful loan move to Blackburn Rovers in January, helping them secure their Championship status. The former Ireland U21 stalwart has been touted as a top prospect since he made his underage international debut. However, due to the strength in depth at the centre half position he has not seen game-time.

CB: Dara O'Shea

O'Shea gets in for his ability to translate his experiences to the rather untested defenders around him. The Ipswich centre-half was part of an impressive Championship campaign for the hatters where they won promotion back to the Premier League on the first attempt.

LB: Tayo Adaramola

LB/LWB has been a problem position for Ireland over the last few years with McClean, Brady, Manning and Liam Scales featuring. For Ireland it's crucial the fullback position becomes younger and this is a perfect opportunity to test out one of Ireland's best prospects.

CM: Jayson Molumby

Similar to Dara O'Shea, Molumby will bring a strong presence in midfield next to the inexperienced players partnering him in Ireland's engine room. The West Brom midfielder had a strong end to the Championship season and featured in Ireland's penalty shootout defeat to Czechia.

CM: Rory Finneran

Finneran is one of Ireland's brightest prospects in midfield and is undoubtably Heimir's most exciting call up during this warm weather camp. The 18 year old made his debut for Blackburn Rovers at age 15 and has been fast tracked into Ireland's midfield. One of Ireland's brightest stars during the U17 World Cup - Finneran brings composure on the ball and an excellent passing range.

RW: Chiedozie Ogbene

Ogbene has not played a huge amount of minutes this season after fighting back from a hamstring issue. The winger is still vital to Ireland's attack and will need regular minutes ahead of the Nations League.

AM: Jack Moylan

Jack Moylan has arguably been the most in-form Irishman this season finding the net 12 times for Lincoln City. Ireland has been crying out for creativity in the middle of the park since Wes Hoolahan retired. The former Shelbourne man might be the solution to the problem.

LW: Millenic Alli

Millenic Alli was an obvious choice to call up after featuring in Ireland's squad for the play-off loser friendly vs North Macedonia. Alli gives Ireland something that is quite rare in the current squad: out and out pace. He found the net in Tuesday's training ground game versus Real Murcia B.

ST: Tom Cannon

Ireland have no doubt found their striker for the future: Troy Parrott. Nonetheless it's important to blood players young into the squad. The former Everton striker has been capped twice by Ireland having previously appeared for the underage squads.
