Gus Poyet clutches at straws trying to defend Sunderland’s disastrous season

Not conceding to Chelsea should be enough to save any man's job shouldn't it?

It's not nice getting sacked. And it's definitely not nice losing your job after one of the most insipid performances your side has given all season as you lose 4-0 to goal-shy Aston Villa. At home. So we do have some sympathy for Gus Poyet who has released a statement taking glory in all the good things he did at Sunderland before he got the boot earlier this week. Poyet says he was proud to manage the club but disappointed to be sacked. He's encouraging fans to think of  all the supposed good and happy times he brought to Wearside, such as an appearance the Capital One Cup final or maybe staving off relegation when everything looked pretty hopeless for the Black Cats last season. But that was all in the past and this season there is only one one thing that Gus feels he can be proud of during the course of the season with Sunderland. The club are hovering above the relegation zone and his sole positive from this campaign is not exactly a ringing endorsement on why he should still have a job. In his League Managers Association statement the former Chelsea man comes out with this pearl of wisdom...

'This season, Sunderland remains the only team not to have conceded to Chelsea and the club has remained outside of the bottom three throughout.'

Slow hand clap everyone. Stunning in its simplicity yet a devastating snapshot on how poor Sunderland have been this season. The statement then goes on to list all of his career achievements to date and doubles up pretty much as a CV and job application. Any desperate chairman who may be trawling through the LMA website looking for someone to keep a clean sheet against the league leaders may have just found their man Twitter has not been kind in its reaction to the bizarre statement:
