Glenn Whelan scores outrageous training ground volley

35-year-old Glenn Whelan joked earlier this week that he's waiting for Real Madrid to come get him after he was released by Aston Villa following their promotion to the Premier League.

Whelan was an important player for Villa and played 36 matches in the Championship last season before he was told his services were no longer required. The Dubliner scored one goal last term - the third in a 3-0 win over Middlesbrough - but he's saved his best stuff for training with this stinging volley during Ireland's training session in Copenhagen on Thursday. https://twitter.com/FAIreland/status/1136702752816603138 Whelan said that he learned of his release from Villa through missed calls on his mobile phone but noted that he was quite content with what he had achieved during his time in the midlands.

“I signed for two years at Aston Villa to get them back in the Premier League and I got them there, so for me, mission complete”, added Whelan. “To be released wasn’t a surprise, obviously [given] what stage I’m at in my career and where Aston Villa want to go. I’m very pleased with what I’ve achieved over the last few seasons.”
