They may have lost the match, but Athlone Town made a real go at scoring a comeback victory against Waterford United in the SSE Airtricity League First division.
Aaron O'Connor and a brace from Daniel Pender saw the Munster men go 3-0 after 58 minutes. Five minutes later, Athlone were awarded a free kick from distance and Daniel Purdy stepped up to take it.
Purdy surprised everyone by producing one of the best free kicks of the year so far, firing the ball into the left top corner, just out of the goalkeeper's reach.
Purdy added a second just over ten minutes later which was quickly followed by an equaliser from Philip Gorman a minute later. However, Waterford grabbed a late winner with Pender completing his hat-trick in the 83rd minute. The result saw Waterford end their run of 12 games without a win.
