German newspaper gives Irish heroes Shane Long and Jon Walters interesting ratings

German footballers may want to skip buying a copy of über popular Bild this afternoon.

The world champions suffered a shock 1-0 loss to Ireland, last night, and the German media reaction has been harsh to say the least. Die Zeit claimed that the German side were 'complacent,' while Süddeutsche Zeitung believed that the some fans were late into the game because they may have been still in the pub. Charming. But the harshest critics of the German team, by far, were the folks at tabloid Bild. They gave Jogi Low's side an absolute battering in their player ratings. Their ratings are slightly different to what we are used to here, however, with their scale only going to six. One is very good. Six, well, that's given to a player who really isn't worth a jersey. Two is very strong, three average, four middling and five weaker than a weak cup of tea your Mammy would be disgusted with.

In contrast, they were full of praise for our Irish players with David Meyler [3], Shane Long [2] and Darren Randolph [2] all coming out smelling of roses. Jon Walters, who we rated extremely well, only gets a 4.

And it does not look good for most of the German team. The newspaper then explained their ratings...

Manuel Neuer 

Powerless for Shane Long's shot. Wasn't tested before that.

Matthias Ginter

Going forward he stopped too often and took the tempo out of the attack.

Jerome Boateng

Some good passes but missed a great headed chance. Caught behind for the goal.

Mats Hummels

Should have been awarded a penalty for the tackle by O'Shea. (The google translation also includes this phrase which we're not quite sure of 'His candle was previously no light'.)

The will was right not in form. Missed a great chance from a Reus cross. In contrast the Irish team ratings were very positive although we've to politefully disagree with their ratings for Johnny Walters and John O'Shea. However Darren Randolph and Shane Long should be the ones most pleased with the rating as both men received a wonderful score of 2 for their substitute performances in last night's heroic victory
