Gary Lineker explains why he is stepping down from BT Sport’s Champions League coverage

As good a reason as any

Gary Lineker has announced he will no longer be presenting BT Sport's Champions League coverage after turning down a contract renewal with the broadcaster. Lineker has been their lead presenter for midweek European football for the last six years, and a huge part of what made their coverage so popular. But tonight's final between Chelsea and Manchester City will be his final game working with BT, as he explained on Twitter.

"I've loved hosting the best club tournament in world football," he wrote. "And I'm genuinely proud of being part of their truly groundbreaking coverage over the past six years. "I would like to thank BT Sport for the generous renewal offer, but after much thought, I have decided to call it a day."

The former England striker then explained the reasoning behind his decision, explaining that "I feel it's time to do things that I've always promised myself I'd do: such as follow Leicester across Europe with my sons (how many opportunities will we have?)" https://twitter.com/garylineker/status/1398325100483547143?s=21 The statement concluded: "A big thank you to everyone at BT Sport, both in front of the camera and behind.
