Football League proposes radical changes including new five-tier, 100-team system

A change is on the cards as a sweeping switch-up has been proposed by the Football League for the start of the 2019/20 season.

The revamp will not affect the Premier League but it will have significant implications among teams in leagues from the Championship down and the changes certainly make for interesting reading.

Included in the proposal is the formation of a brand new league, League Three, which would be contested between 20 teams. The overhaul would also see the Championship, League One and League Two reduced to 20 teams each, down from the current 24. The 72 Football League clubs will get the chance to accept or reject the proposal when they meet at their annual AGM next June.
