A fan has been detained by Russian police after vandalising a statue of former Spartak Moscow midfielder Fyodor Cherenkov.
Cherenkov, a two-time Soviet footballer of the year winner, has a statue erected in his honour outside the Spartak stadium where England defeated Colombia on penalties to advance to the World Cup quarter-finals.
The word "England" was painted in red on to the chest of a statue of Cherenkov who died in 2014. reportedly of a brain tumor, aged 55.

Police did not identify the suspect, or specify a nationality, but said that an investigation was underway and "as a result of the measures taken by police, the individual who committed this act has been identified and detained."
