According to Jack Charlton Paul Gascoigne wanted to feature for the Boys in Green, and he was eligible through his grandmother.
It never happened of course, and instead he became a global icon with a tearful display in a World Cup semi-final in 1990.
The former Newcastle and Lazio genius is a man who has battled numerous demons over the last number of years, but pictures which emerged today suggest that he could be facing his toughest battle yet.
Pictured on the front page of the Sun earlier, Gascoigne looked to be in a very distressed state.
