Dave Whelan must fight chip-pan fires with a box of trusty matches and corner-shop hairspray. The Wigan chairman has attempted to diffuse the furore surrounding his controversial 'chink' and 'Jewish people love money' comments by affording the BBC an interview. In doing so he has mirrored Chief Clancy Wiggum's efforts (in The Simpsons) to get out of a hole by digging himself deeper.
The video (below) contains the most botched sorry since the Florida Fire Department *apologised for installing a hydrant dangerously close to Tiger Woods' residence in 2009. Watch in incredulous awe as Whelan tries to explain his comments only to glug more fuel onto the fire of outrage that is currently blazing.
He squeaked, 'I think the journalist has misquoted me and if they are causing offense to anybody, please accept my apology because I did not say that and I did not mean to upset any of my Jewish friends... They are a great race of people. I do a lot of business with them... I would never insult a Jewish person.'
