Danny Ings has turned down one of the biggest honours Liverpool has to offer

Some people are very superstitious and make sure they are nowhere near the number 13, but when it comes to football jerseys, a few particular digits are coveted.

At Liverpool, the number 7 jersey is particularly iconic, with club legends like Kenny Dalglish and Luis Suarez wearing it when they produced magic for the Reds. Danny Ings had a choice of shirt number when he first arrived from Burnley and he turned down some of the more famous ones and ultimately settled on 28. Ings says he chose the obscure number because he didn't want to put any undue pressure on himself ahead of next season.

“I would make sure I am established before taking any of those numbers,” he said in quotes reported by The Guardian. “It is such a huge club. That was the thinking behind it. I wouldn’t want to go to Liverpool and chuck a shirt on my back like that … it is pressure you don’t need. The expectation at clubs like that is huge. Obviously I am going to work my socks off to earn that number one day. For now I will take a high number and work hard.”
