Zinedine Zidane chose to rest Cristiano Ronaldo for Real Madrid's game against Espanyol on Tuesday night, and the decision backfired.
Gerard Moreno scored the only goal of the game in the final minute of injury-time to give Espanyol their first victory over Real Madrid since 2007, a run that lasted 22 games.
Real had won their previous five games, but played poorly in Barcelona and are now 14 points behind Barcelona in La Liga.
Zidane opted to rest Ronaldo, with the team due to play Getafe on Sunday before travelling to play Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League tie. The Portuguese forward has scored eight goals in his last four games, and Madrid clearly want him fresh for the game against PSG next week.
He was watching from home when Moreno scored a very good goal to give Espanyol the win on Tuesday night.
