Ander Herrera doesn’t look like reclaiming his starting place as Louis van Gaal explains system

They mightn't be recording the flashiest of victories but Manchester United's new formation has brought Louis van Gaal a perfect start to the season.

Two consecutive 1-0 victories will have United fans cautiously hopeful for the long season ahead but a number of supporters are unhappy with the fact that Ander Herrera can't break into the first team. But it doesn't look like that's going to change any time soon as Louis van Gaal has revealed that the system with which he wants to play doesn't leave a starting place for the Spanish midfielder as Michael Carrick and Morgan Schneiderlin make up the central partnership.

"I like a second striker in that position (behind Rooney) more than a third midfielder. That is why, for example, Herrera is not playing but is always coming on as a substitute, because he is more of a controlling midfielder there."

And the Dutchman has also explained why he decided to favour Adnan Januzaj in Friday's away victory at Villa Park while Ashley Young was relegated to the bench.

"He (Januzaj) gave signals in training that he is more and more confident, but also better."
