Sinn Féin Councillor Patricia Logue has described the attacks on Cork City fans at the Brandywell as "disgraceful".
A group of supporters who had made the trip to Derry on Friday night were said to be set upon by "a mob showing hooliganism behaviour" and Logue was at hand to witness the harrowing events.
A resident of the Brandywell, the Councillor spoke with Trevor Welch on 96FM to describe the troubling events that unfolded.
"I went outside my home last night to be met with what I can only describe as a mob showing hooliganism behaviour. It was absolutely disgraceful," she told The Score.
"The Cork fans were set upon for no other good reason than they were Cork supporters. And I, on behalf of the Brandywell community and indeed Derry City Football Club, wish to apologise unreservedly for the behaviour of those people last night.
"I saw a few sticks and there were a few bottles thrown and stones and there was hand-to-hand fighting as well. I have to commend the residents of the Brandywell who came out in support of the Cork fans in order to protect them and prevent further injury.
"A lot of residents came out and offered them into their homes but we managed to get them into a public house and pull down the shutters and taxis were phoned to take them safely out of the area."
