Four members of the 2005 Champions League winning squad will line out for the Reds in Luis Garcia, Vladimir Smicer, Harry Kewell and Jamie Carragher. They will be joined by an impressive strikeforce of Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen in a team that's set to be managed by Ian Rush.
They will take on a Real Madrid XI for which only four names have been confirmed in the form of Roberto Carlos, Fernando Hierro, Claude Makelele and Emilio Butragueño in a match that's also set for a return leg at Anfield in the future.
Ian Ayre, CEO of Liverpool Football Club, said: “We are delighted to announce our first ever Official Liverpool FC Legends team and a first match with Real Madrid. The high calibre of players involved so far is a testament to both Clubs and should make for a great game.
“We are hoping to build on the success of this partnership and look to stage more Official Liverpool FC Legends games in the future.
“As Vice Chair of Liverpool FC Foundation I know that the funds raised from the second leg will benefit the wide range of programmes that help support youngsters and adults both locally and across the world.”
The game takes place at the Santiago Bernabeu on 14 June and we eagerly await the announcement of more legends. Could we see Jerzy Dudek? Please God, let there be Jerzy Dudek.
