We will begin by admitting we are well over this incident from our recent rugby history.

February 2012 and English referee Wayne Barnes cost Ireland an avenging victory over Wales, their conquerors at the 2011 World Cup.

Barnes sent flanker Stephen Ferris to the sin-bin for an alleged tip tackle on Bradley Davies. With 90 seconds left to play, Leigh Halfpenny stepped up and kicked the Welsh to a controversial victory.

Ahead of the Aviva Premiership final, Barnes was on BT Sports’ Rugby Tonight, where, among other things, he discussed tip tackles and the hot-spots he usually penalises.
