Munster’s number eight jersey might forever hold dear poignancy in the province but Axel Foley’s absence will leave a gaping hole all over the island.

The Ireland legend received a powerful standing ovation on Saturday night as he was inducted into the RTÉ Sport Hall of Fame.

Anthony Foley was remembered at the 2016 awards in a special way in what was a stunningly moving tribute from the state broadcaster.

Peter O’Mahony spoke of how their former coach is looking over the Munster team and that the province could’ve fielded 20 different Munster sides against Glasgow on the day they remembered their great leader at Thomond Park and it wouldn’t have mattered because every one of them would’ve wanted to show Foley how much he meant to them.

His dear friend Mick Galwey spoke with passion and love.

Jerry Flannery and Brian O’Driscoll recalled memories of a number eight that is etched in this country’s folklore.

Then, the audience stood to applause before Rosie Foley, Axel’s sister, was presented with the honour in memory of her brother. Ireland’s brother.
