The scrum is the source of a great deal of frustration in modern rugby, as constant resets and the ‘dark arts’ have made the sport’s traditional setpiece into a shadow of its former glory.
But it can still be a thing of beauty, a pure test of technique and power, as Argentinian sides San Isidro and Lomas demonstrated by engaging in a 20-second battle for possession that only ended when both sets of forwards yielded at the same moment.
This is the sort of contest that would get us much more excited the next time the big lads pack down.
