Reports suggests Ireland want Farrell beyond World Cup after huge Saracens bid

The Englishman is contracted until the end of the showpiece event in Australia, with many believing that he will and should move on after what would be eight years in charge.

But, if Ireland were to do well at the World Cup - say a semi-final or final - it would make sense for the IRFU to try and keep Farrell, given his stature in the game and how difficult it is to find top class, proven international coaches.

However, the IRFU's hand may be forced to make a decision earlier than anticipated, with Saracens eager to bring back their former player and first-team coach.

According to a report from RugbyPass, the London club are set to offer Farrell £1 million a year to take over after the World Cup, with the IRFU to meet with Farrell for negotiations.

Saracens director of rugby Mark McCall is standing down after this season with technical adviser Brendan Venter to take over, but it is understood that Farrell is the man they want long term.

When asked during the week about his plans with Ireland by the Irish Independent, Farrell said: “I’m contracted till after the World Cup, that’s 21 months or whatever.

“It’s a long time. It’s a long time. Again, I love doing what I do. I love doing what I do. It’s not just me with decisions like that. But for now, the only thing on my mind is doing as good a job as I possibly can.”
