Malakai Fekitoa went a step further than the usual Lions jersey swap

Far too excited

The Highlanders and New Zealand star wasn’t just happy with the jersey.

One of the most pleasing aspects of the 2017 Lions Tour has been the friendly, sportsmanlike interaction between the tourists and host teams as soon as the final whistle has sounded.

Both sets of teams have been more than happy to swap jerseys, pose for pictures and share a beer or two with their opposite numbers, and then share some of the snaps online.

Last Saturday, it was great to see Stuart Hogg all patched up and in the Crusaders dressing room with Israel Dagg.

And this morning, after Highlanders edged out Lions’ midweek team, the home side were warmly welcomed into the visitors’ dressing room. Outside centres Malakai Fekitoa and Jonathan Joseph traded respective Highlanders and Lions jerseys and looked pretty happy with the transactions.

However, it was only when Fekitoa got back to his own dressing room that the extent of his gear-trading became apparent.

Posing for a picture with Highlanders captain Luke Whitelock, Fekitoa was now kitted out in the famous red jersey AND the Lions shorts. He went full kit. At least Whitelock managed to restrain himself.

Fekitoa missed out on the All Blacks wider squad for the upcoming Test Series with the Lions so he full grasped his chance in Dunedin.
