The Ireland coach is being assessed in the Aviva Stadium medical centre after falling ill on gameday

The IRFU has confirmed Joe Schmidt is being treated for a suspected appendicitis following Ireland’s 26-23 win over Australia at the Aviva Stadium.

An IRFU spokesperson revealed Schmidt had been suffering from symptoms of appendicitis all day but ‘manned up’ for the match.

Ireland assistant coaches Les Kiss and Simon Easterby are dealing with media duties until the health of Schmidt can be fully determined.

Kiss says Schmidt had been under the weather all day but ‘toughed it out for the game’.

‘The guys were aware he was sick; he was kind of stand-offish,’ remarked Ireland captain Paul O’Connell.
