BLACKROCK 50-21 GONZAGA

Blackrock College proved far too strong for Gonzaga at The RDS to clinch their 70th Leinster Senior Schools Cup title.

Blackrock won at a canter against an equally attack-minded Gonzaga in a high-scoring final in sunny yet chilly conditions in Dublin, this afternoon, writes Thomas Lyster.

Gonzaga had never won the Senior Cup before, and this was their second final in four years. Their other appearance was in 2019 when they were well beaten by St Michaels. Blackrock, on the other hand, had won the cup 69 times, with their last triumph coming in 2018.

The game was played at a high tempo throughout, with both teams looking to play with ball in hand. Blackrock’s superior power and skill eventually told as they scored seven tries, including two from Hugh Cooney. It was a great kicking display from Blackrock 10 Zach Quirke, who only missed one kick out of eight.

The atmosphere at the match was electric, with fans from both sides in fine voice – they really do add to the occasion.

Blackrock coach praises ‘brave, wonderful’ players

The final scoreline was harsh to Gonzaga, as they put in a great effort in defence and attack. No-one was arguing that Blackrock were fully deserving winners of what was their 70th Senior Cup victory.

Speaking after the game to Premier Sports, Blackrock College coach Justin Vanstone said, “I could not be more delighted they are such a wonderful group of young men.

“They went out there and were brave, executed and stuck through it during some very tough moments. Obviously, Gonzaga are a quality side as we knew they would be, you could see how much danger they caused with ball in hand.”

Blackrock hooker, and captain, Gus McCarthy commented, “It is unbelievable we have worked so hard over the last three years. They have not all been perfect, but we have worked hard. We are just delighted with that it was an unbelievable game…

“It was an unbelievable team performance from everyone, and all the lads showed up. It is unbelievably satisfying. All the early morning’s work has paid off.”
