UFC stars go to war on Twitter over a very apt nickname

Calm down

Ben Kiely

You can call him Al.

Top-ranked UFC lightweight Al Iaquinta did not take too kindly to fellow 155-er Kajan Johnson dissing his nickname.

During an interview with the MMA Underground, Johnson spoke about how he shares the nickname “Ragin'” with the New Jersey native. Johnson had a light-hearted dig at Iaquinta’s choice of moniker, claiming that it didn’t really suit him.

“I don’t know why he called himself Raging Al Iaquinta. Maybe it’s from childhood or maybe he really liked Raging Bull or something like that (or) it was a (New) Jersey thing, I don’t know.”

“It doesn’t rhyme, there’s no alliteration, he doesn’t seem like he rages very much. Like I don’t anymore, but I did when I was a kid when they gave me the name.”

The Canadian suggested that he should fight Iaquinta, with the winner getting both the bragging rights and the nickname.

“So yeah, I think he needs a new nickname. I think he should be called like Ninja. Fire Ninja Iaquinta would sound sick. I think we should fight. It would be a good fight for me. I should be able to get rid of him in one or two rounds and maybe we could get him a new nickname after.”

Iaquinta got wind of the interview and the rap song that Johnson had released in which he slagged off his nickname, and he felt the need to respond to the TUF Nations competitor.

Johnson kept his cool and took the insult on the chin, but Iaquinta kept coming back with more.

The more Johnson seemed to brush off Iaquinta’s insults, the more enraged the New Jersey native became, as if he was trying to prove that his nickname was apt.

What actually just happened here? It’s just a nickname, folks.
