When Davy Russell set off on odds-on favourite Leave At Dawn in the Powerstown Handicap Hurdle (1.15 Clonmel) he was surely thinking he might have yet another winner to his name.
But the race turned out very differently for the rider, who dropped his whip early on in the 2m, 110y contest. However, as they rounded the turn, and with his charge still near the rear, Davy gets the loan of a whip from fellow jock Phillip Enright. Check out the back left, Davy is in green and gold.
Sadly for Gold Cup winning rider, the whip made little difference as Leave At Dawn finished eighth, well out of the places.
UPDATE: And the day would get even worse for Russell as first he fell in the 2.20 at the Tipperary track and was stood down for the day. Then the stewards took a dim view of the whip-swapping antics and banned him and Enright for five days.
