German-trained Protectionist triumphed in the Melbourne Cup but the race was somewhat overshadowed by the deaths of two horses.

Jockey Ryan Moore guided the Andreas Wohler-trained 7/1 shot to a four-length success overnight, embarking on a late dash to relegate Red Cadeaux to second for the third time at the Flemington showpiece handicap, with the wonderfully named Who Shot Thebarman third.

Irish duo Royal Diamond and Mutual Regard, both from the stable of Johnny Murtagh, trailed in 14th and 20th of the 22 starters.

The buoyant mood was deflated later with the news that Japanese favourite Admire Rakti, who showed well before finishing last, collapsed in his stable and had to be put down. Seventh-place Araldo was also euthanised after breaking a leg in his stable when he was frightened by a passer-by weaving a flag.

Moore told reporters: ‘He’s won very easily, like a very good horse. I was struggling for a position early on, but I had so much horse under me. I’m very pleased for him (winning trainer Andreas Wohler), his record is very good. I’ve got to thank Michelle (Moore’s wife) at home because I’ve been away a lot. You need to win these races for it to be worthwhile. It’s very special.’
