WATCH: Phil Mickelson follows an absolute calamity with one of the greatest shots you’ll see this week

Phil Mickelson

Big Phil’s never boring.

It’ll be a sad day when Phil Mickelson’s time on tour comes to an end. Lefty will be 48 in June and, over time, he will probably undergo a curtailed tournament schedule as he heads towards the senior circuit.

While we have him, though, we’re going to appreciate every piece of Mickelson genius he can conjure up.

This week at Augusta, of course, it’s been a mixed bag. There have been flashes of vintage Phil in there but the three-time Masters winner has not been able to string together scores worthy of challenging the leaderboard.

He’s had a few disasters, too. His third round on Saturday, for instance, got off to a calamitous start. Watch below as he takes an air shot on the opening hole while trying to escape the trees.

But every round with Phil is an adventure and he followed that rather embarrassing moment with a truly ingenious one. On the middle of the par-5 8th fairway, Mickelson takes everyone by surprise and pulls the driver off the deck! And not only does he attempt one of the toughest shots in golf, he executes it to perfection.

Crunching the ball expertly, Mickelson sent a low, squirting screamer that hurtled onto the green and nestled up to nine feet. From 271 yards! And yes, he made the putt for eagle.

What a legend. You just have to love Phil. He’s not going to win this week, but he’s still giving the galleries their fair share of entertainment.
