Watch: This 40ft putt was the highlight of Rory McIlroy’s round on day two of the Masters

Rory closes in on Spieth

There were mixed fortunes for the Irish golfers on day two of the Masters at Augusta National.

Rory McIlroy trailed leader Jordan Spieth by seven shots at one point, but sunk three birdies on the final six holes to record 71, -1 for the day and is -3 at the halfway point of the tournament.

This putt on 16 was the highlight of McIlroy’s second day.

“It feels great,” McIlroy said after his round.

“The course is playing awfully difficult. I came in off the golf course disappointed by the way I finished. I feel a lot different tonight!”

Offaly’s Shane Lowry had a tough day.

The 29 year old enjoyed a stunning first round, finishing on -5 for a tie of the lead, but dropped five shots on day two, carding 76. Lowry is par for the tournament, a score he would’ve undoubtedly welcomed before the Masters began.

However, after Thursday’s heroics, he’ll undoubtedly be disappointed.

Spieth finished his round on +2, meaning he has a score of -2 at the halfway point of the tournament and is one shot ahead of McIlroy. The will play together as a pair on Saturday.
